At present, the Argentine Society for Research in Organic Chemistry (SAIQO, Legal Status C-8671) gathers more than 570 members, mostly researchers from National Universities and/or members of the Scientific Researcher Career of CONICET, together with fellows from different scientific promotion entities and professionals of the discipline linked to the industrial activity, especially the pharmaceutical industry. SAIQO has 22 Regional Delegations covering the whole country (Bahía Blanca; Center of the Province of Buenos Aires; Chaco and Corrientes; Comahue; Comodoro Rivadavia; Córdoba; FCEN-UBA Federal Capital; FFyB-UBA Federal Capital; Jujuy; La Pampa; La Plata; Litoral; Luján; Mar del Plata; Quilmes; Río Cuarto; Rosario; Salta; San Juan; San Luis; Santiago del Estero and Tucumán). Since 1999, researchers from Venezuela, Chile and Uruguay have joined SAIQO, the latter also has a seat within SAIQO, all of them developing activities in their respective countries, thus strengthening ties with Latin America. Within this association converge the various branches of Organic Chemistry such as Organic Synthesis Chemistry, Organic Physical Chemistry, Chemistry of Natural Products, Bioorganic Chemistry, Chemistry of Organometallic Compounds, and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
Currently, the SAIQO Board is formed by the following researchers:
President: Dr. Guillermo R. Labadie
Vice-President: Dr. María Carla Marino
Outgoing President: Dr. Miriam Strumia
Secretary: Dr. Agustina La Venia
Pro-Secretary: Dr. Martín J. Riveira
Treasurer: Dr. Noelia S. Medrán
SAIQO maintains an active position in the development and stimulation of the discipline through the organization of postgraduate courses, in charge of national and foreign specialists, open to the participation of all its associates. The participation of young researchers is permanently encouraged through the granting of scholarships, which allow attendance to postgraduate courses and National Symposia, and biennially, awards for the best Doctoral Thesis in the different specialties. The Society has also instituted the “Dr. Eduardo G. Gros” Award for Outstanding Young Researcher in Organic Chemistry.
